The present composition, several versions of which are known, was highly popular in the 16th century. The Dutch painter Marinus Claesz. van Reymerswaele was influenced by Quentin Massys and Albrecht Dürer and receptive to social and religious themes of Lutheranism. Reymerswaele is first documented in Antwerp from 1509 onwards. His works date between 1521 and 1560, with their characteristic features being a nervous drawing style, strong and cool colours, and in part caricature-like physiognomies. His paintings reflect the climate of the Reformation. The best examples of his painted oeuvre are to be found in the Museo del Prado and the Academia San Fernando in Madrid, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp, and the Museo del Bargello in Florence.
